AMOLED Displays and Smartphones

Samsung Mobile Display’s (SMD) production of AMOLED displays for use in smartphones was supply constrained until the end of 2011, when the company’s Gen 5.5 Fab went into full production. Until that time the majority of the capacity went to servicing Samsung Telecom a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. A number of smartphone manufacturers, most notably, HTC were denied AMOLED panels even though SMD had accepted their orders. In the second half of 2011, SMD produced Galaxy m displays. At the end of 2011, SMD increased capacity off AMOLED substrates is sparking more smartphone manufacturers to adapt4.0”~4.7” AMOLED displays. SMD started production of its Gen 5.5 Fab in 2011 and as it has added capacity, more brands are integrating OLED displays into their smartphones.

Taiwan manufacturers, AUO and CMI are expected to begin AMOLED display production in the 2nd half of 2012 and a number of Chinese manufacturers (IRICO, Tianma, CCO, BOE and TCL) have announced their intent to produce AMOLED displays. Recently, AUO announced that it would produce the 4.3” smartphone AMOLED panels in Q2’2012. In addition, AUO formed a strategic alliance with Idemitsu Kosan of Japan on OLED IP and material. CMI has established a Joint Venture with local government in Chengdu, China. Its G6 LTPS fab is scheduled to start mass production in end of 2013 with 50% of the capacity allocated for OLED panels. China’s Tianma showcased its 3.2” AMOLED panels during the FPD China 2012 this month and CSOT (a subsidiary of TCL) announced it is planning a Gen 4.5 LTPS line in Shenzhen. The line can produce both LCD and AMOLED panels and production is slated to begin before the end of 2012.
