Japan display plan to start producing OLED for smartphone.

According to Nikkei, Japan display, the joint venture between Japan's three major electronics makers and a government-funded investment group said Monday it will begin mass-producing OLED panels for smartphones by 2013.

Japan Display Inc., an alliance of Toshiba Corp., Hitachi Ltd., Sony Corp. and the Innovation Network Corp. of Japan, focus on small and midsize panels.

Speaking at a news conference to mark the company's launch, Japan Display president Shuichi Otsuka indicated samples of the OEL panels will be made available to telecommunications equipment makers as early as the current fiscal year ending March 2013.

At present, Samsung Mobile Display Co. is the only company in the world manufacturing OLED panels for use in smartphones.

The president said Japan Display is "aiming for 300 pixels per inch" for its OLED panels, a resolution 30% higher than that offered by the Samsung Electronics Co. unit.

Japan Display was officially launched as the world's manufacturer of small and midsize LCD panels. The joint venture is capitalized at 230 billion yen, of which 200 billion yen(around 2.4 billion dollars) came from the Innovation Network. It employs roughly 6,200 people.

Japan Display has set its sights on generating 750 billion yen in sales in fiscal 2015. The LCD panel businesses of Toshiba, Hitachi and Sony recorded a combined 450 billion yen (about 2.8 billion dollars) in sales in fiscal 2011.
