Sony and AUO seeking closer ties for AMOLED, sources claim

AU Optronics (AUO) and Sony may consider forming a joint-venture for producing AMOLED panels in order to stay competitive with Korean and Japanese firms, according to industry sources.

The sources said since the two firms pairing up is a way to compete with Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics putting out thin AMOLED TVs.

However, sources with Korean firms said Sony's AMOLED research and development has seen little progress due to major losses Sony has faced in recent years and that Samsung makes up 90% of the AMOLED market. The sources claimed that with AUO also facing major losses, the Taiwan maker's partnership with Sony will not be able to compete with Korean firms.

However, if AMOLED's application to small- and medium-size portable end products becomes a trend, then AUO and Sony may see positive results, the industry sources said.
